Study Guide
Three tracks
The program revolves around three tracks that are closely intertwined. The Project, the Research and the Plan.
The Project is the core of the program. It amounts to a performance/installation that you present at the end of your master program, in the third semester.
The Research is a track that accompanies the development of your project. It can be closely related in theme, but can also highlight a broader topic or aligned motif. Your research leads up to an end communication of the research. This research communication can take many forms.
The track Plan helps you to realize the Project, and trains you to think about your preferred working environment.
These three tracks are intertwined, every meeting or assignment can be of help to your research, your project or your project plan.

First Year
Workshops
A large part of the contact hours at the master program contains workshops by guest lecturers. You can be asked to do some required preparation.
- Hosts
You are the hosts of these workshops, you are expected to introduce the guest, take care of a productive way of introducing yourself/the group, and to create a means of reflection afterwards. Get in contact with the guest lecturer to become informed about their (tech) needs prior to the workshop. Your profiles are shared with the guest lecturer in advance.
Travel Companions
In the second semester a part of the workshop program consists of the lecture series by Sina Seifee. This course is finalized with a Final Essay.
Forum
Forum meetings are moments of feedback between students and the team. Four forum meetings are planned, evenly scheduled throughout the year.
Second Year
In the second year there are no planned workshops where your presence is required. You are welcome to join the regular program for first-year students.
As a second year student you are expected to host the opening days, and a curated day. You are invited and advised to open up your rehearsal process and be present at the State of the Art presentations.
Opening Days
The first two days of the year we ask you to welcome the new students in the program. You are free in organizing these days how you see fit.
Curated Days
In the second year you are required to host a curated day. It should reflect upon your artistic research process. A mentor will guide you on how to construct a suitable content for that day.
There is a budget available for the curated days, for example to invite a guest. All budget decisions should be consulted with Sina.
Rehearsals
Next to the student curated day, which focuses on your artistic research, we encourage you to open up your process in the Artistic Project, by for instance opening up your rehearsals.
Mentoring
The mentoring program is part of the individualized itinerary of the Master students. As such you are invited to formulate yourself the aim, topics, framing, format, etc. for each of your meetings with a mentor. There are 2 kinds of mentoring: generic mentoring and personalized mentoring.
Generic Mentoring is the package of mentoring sessions that comes as a standard part in the training. These meetings are provided by mentors closely related to the Master who are also responsible for 1 (or more) workshop(s). These mentoring sessions are often individual but can also be organized as a duo or a group mentoring. You can ask your mentors for extra sessions depending on your needs. These extra sessions become part of your Personal Mentoring Budget and are considered as such.
The Generic Mentoring includes:
- 6 mentoring sessions with Sina Seifee and/or Bart Van den Eynde
(start + end of semester 1, 2 and 3)
This is an ongoing conversation from start to the completion of the master program on your general well-being and the development of your artistic project and research.
block 1:
- 1 mentoring session regarding Plan
- 1 mentoring session regarding Research
block 2:
- 1 group mentoring regarding Research II
- 1 mentoring session regarding Research II
- 1 mentoring session regarding your project
Personal Mentoring Budget
is mentoring initiated by the students in consultation with the program director and/or other mentors. The individualized mentoring is an answer to your specific needs concerning your artistic project and/or research. Your mentor can be a scientist, artist, technician or any other specialist or coach whose assistance you need for a stretch in your artistic itinerary.
Each student has a set budget to spend on mentoring.
You keep track of your mentoring trajectory and budget in consultation with Sina and Bart.
You make the payment arrangement with your mentor, and pass that information on to the school and your trajectory document.
Attendance
Regarding attendance, we rely on your personal assessment and self-organization. Please communicate in orderly time if you cannot attend a workshop or meeting, by email and/or text. Toneelacademie Maastricht upholds an 80% attendance rate, the master program follows that expectation.
Feedback and deadlines
Every assignment has their own guidelines for the independent test moments, with the assessment criteria. A brief overview:
Plan 1 – January
In line with the workshops and mentoring by Anne you write a first draft of the project plan for your artistic project. Anne grades this test moment.
State of the Arts 2 – end of block 1
This is not a test moment, but a feedback moment. The State of the Arts 1 consists of a group presentation, and individual presentations. In which you communicate the state of your master process.
Research 1 – end of block 2
This final paper wraps up the meetings with Sina Seifee. This paper is graded and together with a grade for your participation in class it makes up for the total grade for Travel Companions.
Research 2 – end of block 2
Ulrike Scholtes is your mentor in writing this document. Ulrike grades this, after meeting with the team during State of the Art II.
Plan II and Project 2 – end of block 2
You write about your project in Project Plan II, both content-based and production wise. Bart grades after meeting with the team during State of the Art 2
Plan 2/ Project 2 takes the form of a dossier, which you could use to apply for funds for example. The two are assessed as two sides of one coin. If you produce a dossier in the field that gets funding or any other ‘access’’ to the professional field, that is seen as a pass for these assignments.
State of the Art 2 – end of block 2
You present the state of your process in the masters, the format and content of the presentations is open and up to you. We have designed SOTA as a generous feedback platform, for students, alumni, peers and (guest)lecturers/mentors.
Project 3 – block 3
Your artistic project finalizes with the presentation of your performance (installation.) Please reserve tickets for the team and jury at this performance. We set a date on which the jury meets. At this jury meeting you are interviewed based on your Plan 3 (see below). Project 3 and Plan 3 will be graded in combination by the jury.
Plan 3 – block 3
After your premiere we ask you to reflect on the dossier you wrote. Project 3 and Plan 3 will be graded in combination by the jury.
Research 3 – block 3
This can take many shapes. It is in some way presented to the public and/or the jury, please reserve tickets for them if needed. Afterwards there is a jury meeting. The jury grades the Research 3.
ECTS per test moment
| Total: | 85 ECTS |
| Research I: Final Paper Travel Companions | 15 ECTS |
| Plan I | 10 ECTS |
| Research II | 12 ECTS |
| Plan II | 13 ECTS |
| Project II | 10 ECTS |
| Project III | 15 ECTS |
| Plan III: Evaluation project plan | 2 ECTS |
| Research III: Communication of the research | 8 ECTS |
College tuition
The program has a duration of 1,5 years, a total of 18 months. Because the trajectory is individual, and follows the path of an artistic process, it is often not contained to the period of September, Year 1 – February, Year 2. We do not want our students to overpay the 1,5 years, because, for example, their premiere date couldn’t be planned before the February deadline. That is why we regard the third block as fluent through the course of the second year. You ask guidance when it is needed, and stay in contact about your plans for graduating.
To overcome the payment problem the fixed arrangement is:
- In the second year you enroll for September and October. This is a must for every student of Master in Theatre; you are always enrolled in those months.
- You de-enroll from November onwards, until your graduation comes up.
- Zuyd does not allow a refund for the months June, July and August. This means you should not end your enrollment during these months, or you will still be paying more than 18 months.
- Easiest solution: you finalize your payment by enrolling again from May to August, to settle the last 4 months of payment.
- If you extend your master program after the first 2 years, you are obliged to pay an extra month of tuition per every extra year of extension.
Communication
There are different means of communication we use.
E-mail
Your student account comes with an e-mail address. Zuyd and Toneelacademie use this e-mail address as the main communication channel. If you do not check it regularly you will miss vital information. You can forward this e-mail to your personal address.
Asimut
The schedule of Toneelacademie is communicated with Asimut. You can find the booked rooms for the Master program. It is also a tool to book your own rooms.
www.zuyd.asimut.net
Zuydnet
Zuydnet.nl is a general tool of Zuyd.
Whatsapp
We use a whatsapp-group for get-go information, informal conversation and group discussions.
Google Drive
A Google Drive was created to locate all the information on workshops, guest lecturers, your trajectory etc. It is the digital archive of the program.
Google Calendar
Next to the Google Drive we use a Google Calendar, to communicate our program dates, but also for you to communicate your performance dates, or other interesting events. You are encouraged to make this Google Calendar your own.
Toneelacademie Maastricht
TAM is located at Lenculenstraat 31-33, Maastricht. You received the general study guide with information particular to the academy. There you can find the team and their contact details.
Some specific practicalities:
Student card
You receive a student card, it allows you to book a room in Toneelacademie, and loan out library books. Not received yet? Make sure you uploaded your passphoto. Still not? cards@zuyd.nl
Start of the class
Before class we gather in the canteen and collectively go to the booked classroom. No drinks or food are allowed in the hall, or classrooms.
